Look Out! Your Shampoo Might Be Damaging Your Hair, Here’s Why...

Your shampoo could be damaging your hair and you won’t even know it. If you’ve been to a hairdresser lately you might find them asking what shampoo and other hair products you are using, and for good reason. A lot of products contain ingredients and chemicals that definitely do not play nice with your hair. They may claim to be the most nourishing hair loving product in the world, but if you read the ingredients label, you soon realise the product is not all it seems.

Here are a few ingredients to look out for…

Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

These sulfates will strip your hair of it natural oils, making your hair brittle, dry, frizzy and will also cause your hair to get oily quicker as your hair will overproduce oils to make up for what has been stripped.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

This is another big bad sulfate - and this one can also be toxic to your body as well!  Anyone with colour treated hair should definitely stay away from SLS, as it can fade your colour quicker and strip oils from your hair.

Parabens

These are used as a preservative agent to make products last longer. But Parabens can mimic the estrogen hormone which can cause all sorts of problems with your hair and body. And it’s not friendly to the environment either, recent studies have found traces of parabens in marine animals as a result of products containing parabens being washed into the sewer and into the environment.

Sodium Chloride. (AKA Salt)

Yep, that’s right salt. It’s used in products to make the consistency thicker, but salt can irritate already sensitive scalps and cause hair dryness and damage.

Dimethicone

Has your hairdresser told you that you have build up in your hair? This ingredient is probably the culprit. Dimethicone is a type of silicone. In hair products it acts as a protective cover on your hairs surface which prevents moisture and nutrients from being absorbed.

Now that you’ve got a good list of ingredients to avoid - we’d thought we’d make it a bit easier by recommending some amazing products that don’t contain any of these nasty ingredients.

Sukin Natural Balance Scalp Scrub

If you’ve just realised you’ve been using harmful products for a while now, then you’d probably benefit from a scalp scrub! This natural and vegan scrub will help clean away any build-up you have. You can use it once to twice a week to keep your scalp clean.

R+Co products contain only the good things - and are also vegan and cruelty free.  That, and their product bottles are beautiful! This Moisturizing Shampoo will be the perfect step to getting your hair back to being healthy, and full of moisture and nutrients again.

Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil

Olaplex is a superstar in hair care. The No. 7 Bonding Oil is perfect to use during heat styling as it protects hair for up to 230C,  and makes your hair silky and shiny!

Of course there are many other products out there, but these are just a few. As a rule of thumb, we’d suggest not purchasing your hair care from a supermarket as these products are the most common offenders for harmful ingredients. Instead, check out your local hair dressers, chemist warehouse or shop online and do some research. Your hair will thank you, we promise!
