Three Habits That Can Irritate Your Skin

Three Habits That Can Irritate Your Skin

If you've been experiencing skin irritation more frequently, you're not alone.  The head of clinical and scientific affairs at Burt's Bees, Hemali Gunt, reported that cases of skin sensitivity rose dramatically in the last decade.  A study revealed that about 60-70 percent of women struggle with itching, burning, stinging, tightness, and dryness. Meanwhile, around 50-60 percent of men experience the same issues with their skin.

The good news is that you can reduce these symptoms through simple habits. In this list, we'll discuss the activities you should avoid to prevent skin irritation.

Exfoliating Your Skin Too Much

Exfoliation is essential in skincare routines because it removes dead skin cells to reveal much brighter skin. However, too much of a good thing can be bad, and that's certainly the case with exfoliation.

Over-exfoliation can irritate and dehydrate your skin because you're already stripping away healthy skin cells and natural oils.  You can strike a balance in your exfoliation routine by using a Sonic Facial Cleansing Brush once to twice a week. These fancy gadgets have four modes of speed and vibrational frequencies to help you get the right amount of exfoliation that your skin needs.

Applying Several Skincare Products

A ten-step skincare routine will not resolve all of your skincare concerns. In fact, it may even worsen your skin problems.

Dermatologist Susan Cox explains that layering numerous skincare products on your face can irritate your skin to the point that you can't tolerate anything. This is especially true when using products with powerful active ingredients that shouldn't be combined, like retinoids and AHA/BHA acids. To keep it safe, use three to four products for your daily routine.

Using Harsh Laundry Detergents

It may seem like laundry products can only affect your clothes. But did you know that the ingredients in these products can get into your skin and irritate it?

Unfortunately, many people don't know that fabric conditioners and drying sheets contain harmful ingredients. Fashionable Clothing states that fabric conditioners contain Quaternary Ammonium Compounds which can irritate your skin and lungs.  Though these compounds can east static on your clothes, they are known to cause skin rashes - even with limited exposure! So if you experience itchiness from your clothes, take a look at your laundry products and switch to gentler options.

Exposing Your Skin to Harsh Shampoos

Shampoos may be for your hair.  However, their residue can get into your skin and irritate it.

Shampoos can induce allergies and Verywell Health states that this product can cause mild skin reactions like rashes or hives. Unfortunately, these allergic reactions can escalate and lead to extreme itchiness and swelling around your eyes and face. To avoid these allergies, stay away from shampoos with common allergens like fragrance, formaldehyde releasers, and parabens.

Having High Stress Levels

No, its not coincidence. Stress does not just aggravate acne breakouts, it can also irritate your skin.

People with underlying skin problems may experience worse psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema whenever they are stressed.  On top of that, you may also get rashes and hives because the stress hormone named cortisol causes inflammation all over the body.

When it comes to skin irritation, prevention is the key.  So, avoid these bad habits to ensure that your skin won't get hives, rashes, and other types of irritation.
