5 Simple Hair Care Treatments You Can Do At Home

In a matter of weeks, life as we know it has changed completely due to the COVID-19 crisis. We have to adapt to this changing world now. And it is scary. For most of us, everything we once enjoyed doing we can no longer do. This includes going to restaurants, going to the cinema, getting a haircut or colour, and visiting a beauty or nail salon. But these are the sacrifices we must make to help slow the spread, and to also reduce the strain on all those at the frontline like doctors and nurses.

If you can, stay home. And while you’re at home, here are 5 easy hair treatments you can do while you wait to go back to your hairdresser.   

  1. Hair detox

    This is a perfect opportunity to detox your hair so it will be shiny and healthy when you next visit your hairdresser. Detoxing your hair will help remove all the grime and build-up, which you get from certain hair products as well as your daily life (think sunshine, pollution). A detox will also make your hair benefit more from other hair treatments, so start here!

    You should detox your hair once a week or once every two weeks depending on how oily your hair is.

    Here are two easy ways to detox your hair:

    a) Baking Soda
    Honestly this ingredient is the champion for homemade beauty treatments.
    Mix ½ cup baking soda with 3 cups hot water.
    Wet your hair until it is completely wet, then pour the baking soda mixture through your hair. Work it in well and massage your scalp, then rinse and condition to seal the detox.

    b) Apple Cider Vinegar
    Apple Cider Vinegar is another hair superstar, and using it as a detox will clean your hair of any grime without removing it’s natural oils.
    Simply dilute ¼ cup of ACV with 2 cups of water. Shampoo and condition your hair as usual, then pour the ACV mixture through your hair. Do not rinse.

  2. Hair masks
    Hair masks are a great way to give your hair an extra boost and keep it looking its best. Here are a few options:

    a) Jojoba Oil Repairing Mask
    This has just one ingredient – Jojoba Oil!
    Simply apply the oil all over your hair, braid the strands, and leave for a few hours or overnight (wearing our Satin Sleeping Cap to lock it in!). Jojoba Oil promotes a healthy scalp, reduces dandruff and will leave your hair moisturised and shiny!

    b) Frizz-busting mask
    This mask will help lock in moisture and repair your hair to reduce frizz.
    Combine 1 sliced banana, 2 tablespoons of plain yoghurt and 1 tablespoon of honey in a blender and mix until all combined. Apply the mask to damp hair, tie your hair up and cover with a shower cap (hopefully one of ours!). Leave on for about 30 – 45 minutes and then rinse with your regular shampoo and conditioner.
  3. Make your own dry shampoo spray
    Let’s be honest, we are definitely NOT going to be shampooing our hair regularly when we’re at home if we can help it. For those days you feel your hair is getting a little too greasy but you can’t be bothered showering yet, this dry shampoo spray is for you.

    Simply combine ½ cup water, 2 tablespoons cornstarch (If you have dark hair, substitute 1 tablespoon of cornstarch for 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder), 2 tablespoons vodka, and add a few drops of your favourite essential oil if you like. Combine all ingredients well and pour into a spray bottle.

    To apply, shake the bottle thoroughly and spray onto greasy patches, making it damp but not wet. Dry with a hairdryer and you’re done!
  4. Make a hair serum
    Hair serums are a quick and easy way to add an extra boost to your hair. There are many homemade recipes out there that cater to a variety of hair types, but here is one that will help you get silky and smooth locks:

    Combine 4 tablespoons of castor oil with 2 tablespoons of coconut oil, use the mixture all over your hair regularly. Works best if left on your hair overnight, and you can seal it in even more by using our satin sleeping cap to lock in the serum!

  5. Make your own shampoo and conditioner
    This is honestly the perfect time to try more natural hair care products, because the transition period isn’t pretty (think greasy, frizzy and no good hair days for at least a month). So what a better time to do it while you’re stuck at home!

    Here are a few easy recipes for shampoo and conditioner:

    Basic shampoo:
    Combine ¼ cup distilled water, ¼ cup liquid castile soap (unscented or scented, your choice), ½ teaspoon jojoba oil and put in a dispenser bottle of choice. Shake before use.

    Apple Cider Vinegar Conditioner:
    Simply combine two tablespoons ACV with one tablespoon of honey, and two cups of water, mix well. Pour this solution on the tips of your hair after shampooing, but don’t rinse it.

If you don’t have all the ingredients above, you should still try switching up your hair care routine to improve the health of your hair. There are some great products out there (that you can get delivered so you don’t have to leave your house!).
